3D Stereo Interactive Medical Visualization

Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (TIPS) formation is an effective treatment for portal hypertension. The procedure requires the insertion of a needle through the liver to connect the hepatic and portal veins. This operation is traditionally guided by fluoroscopic images that do not show the target vein's location during needle insertion. The authors propose providing the clinicians with an interactive, 3D, stereo display so that the position and orientation of the clinician's needle can be seen intraoperatively relative to the target vasculature. This article describes the visualizations provided for intraoperative guidance.
