This paper discusses the application of a new twodimensional algebraic integer encoding scheme for the design of a processor core for JPEG and MPEG applications. The paper concentrates on the efficient implementation of the 2D algebraic integer DCT. The processor takes advantage of the low complexity, multiplierless, high-precision nature of the algebraic integer encoding scheme. Details are provided for the DCT processor including a description of a 0.18 ?m CMOS test chip recently submitted for fabrication.
