A computerized method of extracting characters on label is proposed in this paper. It replaces handwork and reduces production costs and improves efficiency. The moir? contour image of label characters is firstly obtained with a CCD camera, and the label image is preprocessed. Then the raised character on label is extracted using a level set based on Mumford-Shah mode1. Finally, the binary image of label characters is obtained. Experimental results indicate that the method can extract label characters efficiently and operate simply.
