This paper proposes a method that is able to add watermarking ability into a finite-state vector quantization scheme for the purpose of protecting copyrights of digital images. For each source image, the trajectory characteristics of state transitions in the finite-state vector quantization can be used as one kind of features describing the image?s content. To embed watermark bits, the trajectory of state transitions is altered adequately in the encoding process. Extraction of the embedded watermark information is accomplished in the decoder side by reproducing the altered trajectory of state transitions from the received coded image and then recognizing the watermark bits without the original image. Several simulations are included to show the performance of the proposed scheme.
