The operational lifetime is a critical parameter for time hopping ultra wide band (TH-UWB) wireless sensor networks..which is defined as the maximum number of times the task of delivering certain data to the sink node can be repeated before some sensor node runs out of energy under an initial energy at each sensor node is given. With n identical randomly located sensor nodes on a disk of area S and each node transmitting R bits data packet to the sink node, the formula for upper bound on the operation lifetime of TH-UWB wireless sensor network is derived. This formula indicates that the upper bound on the operational lifetime is in proportion to the (..-1)/2 order of the node density n/S. Thus, large-scale dense TH-UWB wireless sensor network is preferable.
