The first step that should be performed when developing a knowledge based system is the design and implementation of the knowledge base that has to be coherent, complete and nonredundant, and is generated starting from the ontology of the application domain. The paper presents the architecture of a knowlede based system that is under development, and has as goal the optimum exploitation of the oil/gas reservoir by using smart wells, and focus on the description of SmartWellOnto, a preliminary version of an ontology for smart wells.
