40th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS'07)
Big Island, Hawaii
January 03-January 06
ISBN: 0-7695-2755-8
Carl Hauser, Washington State University
Like other parts of the economy, the electric power infrastructure is increasingly dependent on accurate and timely exchange of information for operations and markets. Vulnerabilities in the cyber infrastructure that supports this information exchange create risks for the reliability, efficiency and integrity of the power system. The changing regulatory environment, more reliance on distributed generation, and new sensitivities about attacks on the grid's cyber infrastructure increase the importance of the subject. At the same time, incorporation of internet technology into control systems affords new opportunities for reduced costs and better functionality while also presenting new vulnerabilities. The three papers in this session address both current cyber security issues and ones that are likely to emerge in the near future.
