TORRENT is an EU-Supported Framework 5 project that is showing how intelligent control and negotiation capabilities can be built into access networks so as to give the residential customer the ability to choose among a variety of service offerings, in order to achieve an optimal combination of service parameters. This access should be transparent to the type of the core network being addressed. The realisation of a prototype service to resource management system based on intelligent agent technology is now under way.
