This paper presents an approach to the problem of facilitating dynamic and secure networking in a highly heterogeneous environment. The proposed design includes new architectural components and functions collected at a separate layer--the session layer--while leaving functionality inside the TCP/IP stack intact. Following an overview of the approach and the underlying principles, it is argued that architectural changes in system design are necessary for a smooth evolution of the Internet in the future.
