Automatic fingerprint authentication is an integral part in many security systems. Because not every person is always suited to that technology, a general purpose security system needs a secure exception handling. We present ideas and results to use an existing fingerprint sensor for complementary tasks allowing such fall-back solutions: Additionally to the detection of movement we detect the pressure variation applied by a finger. This pressure detection is the basis for various exception handling scenarios, such as PIN-pad entry or more sophisticated approaches like fingerprint signatures.
