In conventional predictive coding scheme, inter/intra prediction value is subtracted from the original pixel value before applying transform, quantization and entropy coding. As the subtraction discards the precious information of the prediction value, we suspect it would cause a coding loss. In this paper, we conduct a study on a coding method that does predict the pixel value but does not encode the residue. Experimental results show that the coding performance is improved (i.e., the Lagrangian cost is reduced) by 3-44 %.
