The unrelenting growth of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) based proteomic data to gigabytes per sample and terabytes per experiment motivates this investigation into compression methods suited to MS signal sources. Proteomics, the study of the protein composition of biological entities, is expected to have a significant impact on science and medicine. MS is an enabling technology for proteomics because it can simultaneously indicate both peptide sequences and abundances for hundreds of proteins from a given sample.
