We present a redesign of some aspects of the service functionalities within a home network system using SIP (Session Initiation Protocol). SIP is well deployed in the communication area because of VoIP and mobility support. The advantages of implementing the home network using SIP include seamless connectivity between devices inside and outside the home and integration of VoIP with home network applications. We have chosen UPnP as the framework for operation of a home network system and show how the discovery functionality of UPnP may be implemented using SIP, preserving the UPnP API specifications.
