Computer Graphics International 2004 (CGI'04) Extracting Measurements from Existing Photographs of Ancient Pottery Crete, Greece June 16-June 19 ISBN: 0-7695-2171-1
By using known symmetry of an artifact we can extract accurate 3D measurements from a single photograph. This is done by combining human ability to identify features with an automatic calculation that discovers and reverses the perspective projection of the original camera. The user fits ellipses on a computer image to features known to be circles in the original 3D space. The procedure yields measurements accurate to better than 1%.
