This paper describes two component technologies that might economically replace instructor-student interaction in online language classrooms. We designed learning activities and supporting technologies for unsupervised, asynchronous, online collaborative learning. Students grouped in teams of three exchange voicemail and letters, and evaluate each other's work. The technology we use is trivial. The course contents are relatively complex. We believe that unsupervised online group learning succeeds when the following conditions are met: the learners understand the task, agree to perform the task, are forced to interact to achieve the task, have the means to interact, and have an authoritative reference to evaluate their peers' performance. Technology in large-scale deployment should be ubiquitous and transparent.
