Modeling languages are needed to describe the conceptual construct underlying software. Several modeling languages have been proposed during the last decades. In order to properly understand and assess software modeling languages, we believe that a set of techniques is needed. In this paper, we describe several techniques that can be applied for studying and evaluating cognitive complexity (comprehensibility) of software modeling languages. These techniques have been applied to human-computer interaction, human languages, programming languages and cognitive science before.
