This paper presents a novel application of the wake-up based power management protocol. MAC layer power man- agement protocols have been studied for years. The power management mechanism which exploits the IEEE 802.11 power saving mode to save energy by turning on/off the network interface card is called the wake-up based power management. The previous proposals for the wake-up based power management focus on the network operations and neighbor discovery. In this paper, we apply the wake-up based power management to neighbor monitoring in se- curing mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). We propose a probabilistic wake-up based power management protocol for neighbor monitoring which aims to reduce energy con- sumption while preserving the effectiveness of misbehaving node detection. We show by analysis and simulation the re- lation between the wake-up probability and the misbehavior detection rate.
