The Expert LAN Designer (ELAND) is described. It is a rule-based expert system for configuring distributed information systems operating on a LAN. A general overview of the system and the motivations for major design choices is presented, and the modules comprising ELAND's inference engine are explained. An example session with ELAND is provided.
