Simulation modeling has been widely used in various areas as a powerful problem-solving technique especially for designing and analyzing the complex systems. This paper introduces a window-driven graphical user interface modeling and simulation workbench, DEVSW, which we developed to facilitate the use of the existing DEVS (Discrete Event System Specification) framework. To demonstrate the usage and powerfulness of DEVSW, a modeling and simulation example of DEVS-based evaluation of buffering control schemes for the continuous media retrieval in the multimedia storage server is presented. With the help of DEVSW, we formulate and synthesize a model of the multimedia storage server architecture. While the major effort of this work is in model development, some performance results in terms of the jitters ratio are available from several experimental runs of the proposed buffer scheme.
