This paper presents a conceptual model for user centered human-computer interface design. It considers that the user's task analysis and description is analogous to knowledge acquisition and representation for knowledge based systems. The paper presents TAOS, a task-and-action oriented framework used to define a modeling language of the domain (KL-ONE like language) and a methodology for building and validating the user's task description. It also demonstrates how TAOS is particularly adapted for the description and analysis of the user's task in the context of human-computer interface design.
