The Information Sciences Institute of the University of Southern California established the MOSIS Service in 1981 in response to a request from DARPA to provide access to advanced IC technologies for their research community. This effort was expanded in 1985 by a join effort between DARPA and NSF to include the submission of designs from University classes in VLSI design. Both DARPA and NSF provided funding for fabrication of these educational designs from 1985 through 1995. The funding situation changed significantly in 1994 as a result of the shrinking Federal budget. At this time, DARPA withdrew from the educational program, and NSF announced its planned withdrawal by 2000. The present status of the MOSIS Service (Very Healthy!), current technology offerings and packaging options as well as the status of the VLSI Educational Program will be presented below.
