In this paper, an online structural recognition (OLSR) system for Chinese characters is proposed. A pre-classification scheme based on this OLSR is applied to improve the performance of a pure statistical pattern matching (SPM) based Chinese character recognition engine. The experimental result shows that the pre-classifier not only reduces the overall recognition time but also improves the online recognition accuracy
