This paper reviews the process of developing real-time, human-machine interfaces (HMIs) for embedded systems. This process is described in terms of the rapid development of dynamic graphical interfaces. The necessity of rapidly prototyping the HMI is discussed along with the rapid prototyping paradox which results from building prototypes which cannot be used in the final implementation of the HMI. A methodology supported by the VAPS and CCG products of Virtual Prototypes Inc. (VPI) is proposed and discussed.
