Michael Jackson's problem frame concept is used to discuss the usability of different method features to design coordination mechanisms. Based on coordination theory and a case we identify three specific coordination frames-the simple coordination frame, the coordination of work frame, and the elaborate coordination of work frame. These frames help us characterize and understand coordination problems. We also present four general frames-the simple IS frame, the simple control frame, the workpieces frame, and the connection frame. These frames explicate different features of contemporary design methods. We compare the coordination frames and the general frames to evaluate the fits and misfits between method features and the challenges involved in designing coordination mechanisms. The analysis provides lessons on two levels. First, we learn about coordination problems and method features that are, or are not, useful to design coordination mechanisms. Second, we learn about problem frames as an approach to software methodology research.
