30th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) Volume 3: Information System Track-Organizational Systems and Technology

The lack of a dominant Object-Oriented (00) standard has been a hindrance to the 00 paradigm's successfid adoption on a large scale. Currently, within different versions of 00 methodologies, various 00 concepts can exist under different names and interpretations. While recently there have been some attempts to standardise 00 systems development, until now, no standard has emerged as the dominant standard in practice. The objective of this paper is to assess benefits of a dominant standard and to investigate strengths and weaknesses of the current approaches towards standardization. Based on this investigation, we outline how these different standardization approaches can contribute toward the emergence of a dominant standard. We conclude that a metamodelling approach, combined with argumentation and ontology when necessary, has the best chances to achieve the goal that, to quote Snyder [1], "those applying 00 technology will one day speak the same language".
