The design of a host-system adapter that exploits the full capabilities of Fibre Channel can present a major technical challenge because of the Gb/s data rates involved. In this paper, we discuss various architectural issues and features of a high-performance protocol engine that we are developing as part of an ultra high-speed networking solution based on Fibre Channel. Our approach attempts to maximize hardware-assisted "real-time" protocol processing, while minimizing involvement by the software. The paper also presents a brief overview of recent developments in the Fibre Channel technology in general, potential applications of our protocol engine, and trends in Fibre Channel technology as an ultra-high speed networking solution.
Index Terms:
Fibre Channel, High speed networking, protocol engine real-time protocol processing
