Abstract: Building the Information Highway has been recognized as an important element in constructing the future multimedia communication network infrastructure. This paper, reports latest research and development activities for high-speed communication technologies for the Information Highway in Japan. In particular, it discusses Asynchronous Transfer Mode based network system architecture in detail. Based on these R&D activities, deployment of the Information Highway in Japan has been initiated to provide the nationwide multimedia communication network for both commercial services and trials for new multimedia services. These activities and their targets are also discussed.
