The paper presents the concepts of a CAD environment being developed in the Copernicus COPRODES cooperation, with a special emphasis on the datapath design subsystem. The architecture and the distributed control scheme of the datapath is described. Preliminary results suggest that the whole system will allow the synthesis of communication processors based on a timing diagram specification. Within the system, the datapath design sub- system synthetizes an arbitrary datapath from a functional VHDL description into Xilinx Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs).
