Area Optimization of Analog Circuits Considering Matching Constraints

In precision analog circuits, active device area is often determined by matching requirements. The matching behavior of integrated components improves with enlarging their active area. In order to limit the mismatch-induced error of a given parameter (e.g. output signal) of a complex circuit, the areas of all components have to be chosen properly according to their individual contribution to the total output signal error.Based on a fully analytical approach, in this paper a universal solution for the optimum area distribution is derived. The method represents an efficient alternative to time consuming numerical Monte-Carlo simulations. Moreover, it allows estimating total chip areas required to guarantee matching performance with a high precision. Applying this method to basic analog CMOS sub-circuits shows examples.
