This paper presents an overview of some special power converters called Stacked Multicell Converters (SMC), with special attention on their control strategy. A SMC is a converter that is used to control high voltages with conventional power semiconductors. This converter has a characteristic configuration composed by p columns and n stacks. It allows to reduce the voltage and current stresses on semiconductor components and then attain high output voltages. This paper begins with a brief explanation on how a SMC works and its control complexity. A complete explanation of a SPWM control strategy by DSP in SMC is clearly given. Simulation and experimental results from a 100 V input voltage and 0.5 A output current prototype complement the work.
