Medical imaging is characterized by strict requirements and high standards for image acquisition, storage, and processing. These requirements and standards translate into large image files that need to be processed, stored and transmitted fast, preferably in real time. The wavelet decomposition using the adaptive algorithm described below maximizes information in the traditional low-resolution part, thus allowing only one fourth of the size of the original image to be processed for effective archiving, and transmission without appreciable loss.
