We are pleased to continue our association with the ACM/IFIP/USENIX International Middleware Conference (http://www.eecg.toronto.edu/middleware2004/) this year. This issue of IEEE Distributed Systems Online includes the first two of six articles that will be presented as works in progress at the conference, now in its fifth year.
Two further articles will appear in each of the September and October issues of
DS Online, in time for Middleware 2004, which will be held 18

22 October in Toronto.
These works-in-progress articles, chosen by the conference program committee from a large selection of excellent submissions, describe ongoing work and interim results.
Please contact the authors for more details on the work presented.
"Distributed Event Notification for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks" (http://csdl.computer.org/dl/mags/ds/2004/08/o8002.htm) discusses a highly available distributed event notification service designed to help emergency-and-rescue applications.
"Discovering Services Is Not Enough" (http://csdl.computer.org/dl/mags/ds/2004/08/o8003.htm) tackles the problem that tomorrow's mobile users—faced with multiple electronic devices, service providers, and ISPs—might have indentifying available services and using them by combining the acquisition of role-based credentials with service discovery.
