Calls for IEEE CS Publications

Over the past ten years, Internet service providers have built out their networks to cope with what they perceive as steadily increasing user demands. Because of that rapid development, network measurement has tended to have lower priority than immediate network operations, deployment, and upgrade concerns.

For a 2004 special issue on measuring performance, IEEE Internet Computing invites researchers and practitioners to submit original works on Internet measurement, especially studies that involve open source or freely available tools and data from wide area networks. Suitable topics include Internet topology, routing system behavior, understanding protocol behavior, monitoring/management of large-scale backbones, and quality of service monitoring.

Call for Articles for Computer

Computer seeks articles for a special issue on high-speed Internet security, to appear in June 2004. Guest editors are Simon Shim from San Jose State University, Li Gong from Sun Microsystems, Avi Rubin from the Johns Hopkins University, and Linley Gwennap from the Linley Group.

The growth of high-speed Internet service has strained the limits of existing network security measures. The CERT Coordination Center of the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University indicates that the number of reported security-breach incidents in the first half of 2003 climbed to 76,404—just under the 82,094 reported for the entire year of 2002.

Computer's special issue will focus on strategies for maintaining robust security standards in ever-faster network environments. Proposed topics include Internet security architecture, security servers, virtual private networks, grid computing security, and XML security, in addition to papers on original topics.

Computer seeks articles for a special issue on sensor networks, to appear in August 2004. Guest editors are David Culler from the University of California, Berkeley, Mani Srivastava from the University of California, Los Angeles, and Deborah Estrin from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Distributed systems of embedded smart sensors and actuators promise unprecedented capabilities for the instrumentation and monitoring of the physical world including: temperature, vibration, air pressure, chemicals, even voice and video data. Proponents envision a host of novel applications for sensor networks, from earthquake structural failure analysis to rainforest habitat research. The small and many characteristics of sensor networks have fostered research in disciplines that have previously been focused on computing and networking at a much larger scale. This interest is driven by the vision that, like the Internet, large-scale distributed networks of sensors will pervade the world but at a physical, rather than virtual, level.

Computer's special issue will focus on all aspects of the field: hardware, architectures, wireless communication, networking, middleware, application development, applications, and experience. There are opportunities for short and long papers, providing a forum for reporting on both early and mature research.

Topics of particular interest include sensor network architectures; sensor node hardware; networking; low-power protocols and services; distributed algorithms; data query, dissemination, routing, and fusion; novel applications and services; application development tools; and deployment experiences.

JSPW 2004

Researchers, practitioners, and students interested in all aspects of packaging technology, ranging from personal to high-performance systems, will gather in Hakone, Japan, from 2 to 4 February for the 2004 Japanese Systems Packaging Workshop. The workshop schedule includes a tour of the Earth Simulator Center in Yokohama, as well as a session on packaging technology for automobiles and robots. Workshop sessions will also address developments in packaging strategies for cellular phones and other consumer products.

DATE 2004

Computing professionals from around the world will meet in Paris from 16 to 20 February for the Design, Automation, and Test in Europe conference and exhibition. Conference activities include themed workshops on new trends in multimedia and ultra low-power design. The DATE conference has traditionally offered a forum for designers as an integral part of the workshop schedule. This year, the forum will focus on automotive systems design applications. The 2004 exhibition is expected to feature more than 100 of the world's leading suppliers of design and automation tools.

Immediately preceding DATE 2004 in Paris is the 2004 System Level Interconnect Prediction workshop, which will focus on the modeling and prediction of usable properties of optimized interconnect systems.
