As many of you might know, two of our senior board members, Carl Machover and Bert Herzog recently retired from the IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications editorial board. As a result, we've been engaged in a search for new board members.
So it's with great pleasure that I introduce our two newest additions: Dieter Fellner and Jock Mackinlay.
Dieter Fellner—who is a professor of computer science at the Technical University of Braunschweig and founding director of their Computer Graphics Institute—brings a wealth of experience in user interface design, software engineering, computer graphics, and digital libraries. His past experience includes serving on editorial boards for other computer graphics magazines. He will also help strengthen our connections to the European graphics communities. We all look forward to his contributions to IEEE CG&A, and we welcome him to our editorial board.
Jock Mackinlay is a member of the research staff at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center and is part of their User Interface Research Group. Jock brings a great depth of experience and expertise as well as an extensive record of publications in visualization, especially in information visualization. I am delighted to welcome Jock to our board, and we are all looking forward to his contributions to our magazine.
In addition to these new members, other changes have taken place on the board. Markus Gross will be stepping down as associate editor in chief to devote more energy to his new position as papers chair of Siggraph 05. Markus did an absolutely first-class job in organizing and managing our regular (nontheme) article submissions, and we are very appreciative of his efforts and of the results of his efforts; we wish him much success with Siggraph 05!
To take over this position, we welcome Holly Rushmeier as the new associate editor in chief in charge of this important task. Holly has been a board member since March of 2002 and brings superb experience, including acting as a former board member and EIC of the ACM Transactions on Graphics.
I also would like to acknowledge the marvelous job my predecessor, Jim Thomas, did during his watch as EIC. Jim is a long-time friend and colleague. He is not only a great researcher, but also a superb manager and leader, and a great pleasure to work with. Under Jim's gentle ministrations, we've improved all areas of the magazine, from research papers to theme issues on current and forthcoming topics to departments. He also introduced our first peer-reviewed CD-ROM in 2002. We've continued that trend with our latest CD this January, with articles based on the Siggraph 03 Emerging Technologies exhibit. We'd certainly like your feedback regarding our latest CD as well as hearing your thoughts and ideas about other special topics for future CD-ROM issues. We'd very much appreciate your taking a few minutes to fill in the feedback form at http://www.computer.org/cga/CD-feedback.htm.
It is a continuing privilege to serve as a member of the editorial board and as your EIC.
