Dear Members of the ACM, IEEE Computer Society, and computing community

Welcome to this cooperative, ACM/IEEE Computer Society Discussion Forum.  As we noted in our co-published letter, “From the Presidents of the IEEE Computer Society and ACM” that appeared in the August, 2011 issues of CACM and Computer magazine, we have created this Forum to solicit comment, discussion, ideas, and suggestions regarding matters that related to cooperative activities that would benefit the members of both of our societies as well as the computing community in general.

All contributions to this Forum will automatically be noted as “anonymous.”  However if you wish to leave your name and email address, please feel free to do that.  Alternatively, you can email us directly. We welcome your input to this Forum.

I have liked the ACM technical education resources that come with my ACM membership, specifically

  1. Books 24x7
  2. Safari Books Online
  3. K Element Courses
  4. Brainbench Tests (via K Element Courses)

I suggest that by combing the purchasing power agreements between the two organizations, these resources could be either augmented to include additional resources the other organization does not have, or could enhance and expand these resource to include even more up to date and technically relevant ressources.

The Books 24x7 offering is fine, but often the titles are a little bit behind current technologies.
The same is true for the Safari Books online offering, which is a small subset of what Safari Books offers technically.
Presently, some putting a single title on the Safari bookshelf sometimes takes up 8 of the 10 slots available.

These resources perhaps could be enhanced to include even more titles than are presently offered by negotiating new deals based on both organizations memberships and purchasing power, allowing both organizations even better resources for all their members.

I recently participated in a survey commissioned by ACM/IEEE which asked about learning resources, and made mention of the new video titles now on the Safari Books Online resources, if only peripherally, to make mention of the possibility of video offerings from O'Reilly Books. I for one, would be interested in the expanded video offerings from O'Reilly or other competent technical learning resource providers as an addition to the current ACM offerings.

Again, perhaps a joint effort would allow for a combined buying power to lower overall costs for both organizations while at the same time increasing the value of their individual membership plan offerings.

I also think that both societies could benefit from leveraging common services. Digital libraries and professional development are two possibilities. I belonged to both societies, at one time, as noted by other posts. With rising costs, I found that I could not afford both (or get through all the articles from both). I found IEEE articles to be geared more toward practical application, where ACM seemed to focus more on an academic audience. So, when I had to make a choice, I chose IEEE. However, ACM SIGSoft had good articles. There is so much information to filter, with limited time. Audio aricles would allow using commute times, but might not be effective for some content.
Another area of cooperation would be in/among student organizations. Typically, there is not that much room for both an ACM student chapter and an IEEE CS student chapter; The audience(s), goals, and methods are very similar. Why not pool student benefits and make both societies available to students?

What a job choosing kitchen units is. My wife and myself have just finished a grueling three weeks on the hunt for some kitchen units to suit our country cottage. It’s actually worse than choosing wallpaper. Everyday we came home with a different idea of what we wanted. What started out as a simple mission to find a solid pine kitchen that would match our country cottage ended up being a contemporary. High gloss black kitchen with solid oak worktops. Price variations were crazy. Started with a budged of £1000 and ended up spending £2150. Really did get value for money though from a company called http://www.cheapestkitchensintheworld.co.uk . I would definately recommend them to anyone looking to buy a value for money kitchen.
