"Virtue is its own reward," wrote Ovid some 2,000 years ago. What does this mean to a 21st-century software engineer? What is the value of ethical behavior to a practicing software engineer? What are the implications of complying with a professional society's code of ethics?

If you hold yourself out as a "software engineer," you're saying you have more knowledge and better skills in software development than the average person on the street. But your clients or employers might not be software engineers. So they may need to take your expertise and recommendations on trust. How might their trust in you be established and developed?
