Viewpoint: The Future of Computing Practice and Education
March 2010 issue by: Nicholas Bowen and Jim Spohrer, IBM. If you observe the scope of change in Computer Science between 1980 and 2010, the volume of new technologies and their applications is overwhelming. Clearly, consideration must be given to improving undergraduate CS curricula, strengthening graduate programs, and providing opportunities for continued education and professional development. The purpose of this online discussion is to develop a point of view regarding the problems outlined in the column and to help the IEEE Computer Society develop solutions. A question that can initiate this discussion is, What are the critical skill gaps that employers observe that the rapid changes in information technology induce or exacerbate? Nicholas Bowen is Vice President, Technology at IBM. Contact him at bowenn@us.ibm.com. Jim Spohrer is currently the director of IBM's university programs and was the founding director of service research at IBM's Almaden Research Center, San Jose, Calif. Contact him at spohrer@us.ibm.com.
