How to Form a Chapter

Within the IEEE Computer Society there are two types of chapters you may  form: regular professional chapters and student branch chapters.

Chapters
A Chapter is a geographical subunit of the Computer Society and established by petition to the IEEE.  Chapters are concerned with representing and fulfilling the needs of the member in their specific geographical area.  Chapters allow members to meet face to face and host local activities.

In accordance with the actions of the IEEE Member and Geographic Activities Board, there are specifics rules and guidelines for forming IEEE geographic units.

NOTE: Please read the notification regarding the

recent changes in the geographic unit formation process (DOC, 55 KB)

for Sections, Subsections, Technical Chapters and Affinity Groups, as approved by the MGA Board on 19 November 2011. These changes are in effect as of 1 January 2012. These changes do not apply to Student Branch Chapters.

Student Branch Chapters
In order to form a student branch chapter it is necessary to have a  faculty advisor who is also a member of the Computer Society and six student members. Fill out and submit the chapter petition.  If the petition is in order, IEEE student services will take the necessary action to obtain formal approval of the petition by the regional director, the regional student activities committee chair, and the Computer Society President.
