A Jubilee Year!
In 2006 we are celebrating a year of jubilee for the electronic computer, the 60th anniversary of the ENIAC computer, and the 60th anniversary of the IEEE Computer Society.

The IEEE Computer Society traces its origins back to the 1946 formation of the Subcommittee on Large-Scale Computing Devices of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE), one of the two organizations that merged to form the IEEE. That same year saw the invention of the ENIAC, the first general-purpose electronic digital computer.

"In Our Time" column in Computer Magazine
This monthly column highlights major technological advances that typically have occurred in the past 15 years. In the January issue, David Alan Grier introduces the column and includes a brief history of the Society. Click here to read the January column.

Technology of the Decade Award
A new award that recognizes a major, innovative contribution in information technology during the past 10 years. Nominations are open to anyone or group of individuals who have made major contributions in the computer science and engineering fields.

The award will be presented at a joint meeting of the society's Board of Governors and the IEEE Education Society's board. Check back soon for details.

Golden Core Recognition


60th Anniversary History Competition for Students -- First Place Prize of $10,000
Groups of four undergraduate students will design a website that covers a significant topic or event in the history of computing.


Celebrate at CoSTEP 2006!
The 2006 Congress on Software Technology and Engineering Practice (CoSTEP) is another major event planned for celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the IEEE Computer Society. CoSTEP brings together four international conferences in a single location from 17-22 September in Chicago, IL. http://conferences.computer.org/costep


Other Events
The Region 9 Chapters (Latin America region) of the IEEE Computer Society will celebrate the 60th Anniversary in conjunction with the 2006 IFIP World Computer Congress in August.
