Integrating Business and Software Development Models
November/December 2002 (vol. 19 no. 6)
pp. 28-33

Developing the right products the right way is challenging, not least in software product development. It requires good engineering practices, but also sound business decisions. This article illustrates how different software development lifecycle models can be mapped to business decisions models, by mapping business decision gates and major development milestones. One development lifecycle from a formal model, Unified Process, and one lifecycle from an agile model, Extreme Programming, have been mapped to the ABB Gate Model, a business decision model for product development projects. The ABB Gate Model was developed to ensure that released products could be successfully deployed into the marketplace.
