The use of a business-focused development process can greatly facilitate producing and maintaining Cobol programs. The authors outline an OPEN (object-oriented process, environment, and notation) process framework, the most appropriate current process for object-oriented and component-based development in a business environment, in the context of implementations using the Cobol language. Its underpinning meta-model and framework make OPEN valuable for both development and maintenance.
