The paper considers protocols that employ 2-phase voting among replica processes to move a correct data from the external environment to the end-user(s) in a secure real-time application setting. The replicas may be wireless computation nodes deployed in a power-constrained environment. We employ cross-layer optimization techniques to reduce the amount of network message exchanges and device processing cycles expended for data delivery to the user. This optimization can in turn reduce the battery energy consumption of wireless devices that participate in the voting protocol.
We take the current layered design of 2-phase commit protocol among replicas [1], and subject it to cross-layer optimization. Our optimization involves exploiting the metainformation available from the upper layer replication management to: i) eliminate redundant message flows and statetracking among replicas in the voting layer, and ii) reconfigure the parameterizable operations in the IEEE-802.11 MAClayer of devices and network elements. The paper identifies the specific manifestations of optimization exercises as infused from 2-phase replica voting protocols.
