Maintaining well-documented source-code is a fairly straight-forward process (although not foolproof) when it is performed by the code's original author. Because future information systems will contain functionality (provided in software units termed components) that was developed by organizations external to the one responsible for assembling the system, those activities traditionally associated with the software maintenance process may need to be modified or replaced.
