On the anniversary of the 15 year history of the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) at Credit Suisse, the authors show why and how they introduced service oriented architecture in an existing IT system. It is shown that semantic alignment and good governance, but not technology, are the key challenges when implementing SOA on a large scale. The authors would also like to make the point that fundamental architectural changes in very large application landscapes take much longer than most people expect. So long-term strategy and stamina in execution are necessary prerequisites for success.
