For the past two decades, software patterns have significantly influenced how developers design and implement computing systems, well above and beyond the most popular research in the software field. This article discusses the past, present, and future trends of software patterns to help software developers and managers understand where the field has come from, where it's headed, and how learning more about patterns can benefit projects. This article is part of a special issue on software patterns.
