The possibility of cross-fertilization of technology between scientific and commercial software user groups is examined. The role of the Unix operating system in providing the technological bridge between the two communities is explored. The development of computer-aided software engineering, which is viewed as being linked to future improvements in Unix, is discussed in this context.
