Investigators at the Atlanta Veterans Affairs Rehabilitation Research and Development Center designed Cyber Crumbs to support successful aging with progressive vision loss. Two-thirds of the people who have lost (or are losing) their vision are over the age of 65. Cyber Crumbs provides support for independent travel and can also act as a location- and time-specific memory aid. It's the electronic equivalent of a trail of bread crumbs. An initial prototype evaluation employing 10 participants was conducted to determine this concept's viability and utility. Results showed significant improvements in orientation and wayfinding performance in unfamiliar indoor settings.
