RISC CPUs can be found at the heart of many high volume portable and hand held consumer products. Examples of such products include pagers, mobile phones and PDAs. The processor often accounts for a major component of the system's power consumption. Therefore careful consideration must be taken at the design stage to ensure that the processor's power consumption is minimized. In this article, the sources of power consumption in a microprocessor are discussed and a power analysis of ARM7 is presented. The processor's impact on the power consumption at the system level is then introduced.
