Active data warehousing enables firms to improve decision making by providing access to real time data at their time of need. This paper examines firms’ successful implementation of active data warehouses from a project management perspective. Using the lens of the logical framework method, we analyze twelve case studies related to active data warehousing to understand their goals, purposes, outputs, and inputs for service providers and manufacturers/retailers. Our findings show that service providers are motivated by customer related goals, focus on obtaining data consistency, and obtain improvement in customer service and cost savings by leveraging various managerially oriented inputs, when they implement active data warehouses. In contrast, manufactures/retailers focus on operational goals, strive to improve system performance, and are able to improve system response time by integrating different systems. These findings should be useful for organizations planning to implement active data warehouses.
