ABSTRACT
Mobile ad hoc networks (manets) will form a critical part of the communications infrastructure used by first responders. Service-Oriented Computing, in particular Semantic Web-based services, will enable applications that provide enhanced situation awareness, multi-jurisdictional interoperability, among other capabilities. While service-oriented computing promises to enable this vision, the real world settings create many technical obstacles. The complex, dynamic, and often disconnected nature of mobile networks quickly overwhelm centralized controls and data distribution. Sophisticated, adaptive, reasoning may be required to effectively access and utilize resources, especially during network transitions. Flexible matching, service choreography, and composition may be required to use the heterogeneous mix of available resources. A multidisciplinary team at Drexel University has been empirically studying theses issues in the Philadelphia Area Urban Wireless Network Testbed. This article outlines an approach to integrating the networking and agent layers to enable agents to reason about current operating context. Empirical data shows how network-aware, autonomous, mobile agents can manage information services on live manet environments.<p>This article is part of a special issue on Homeland Security.</p>
